Rann welcomes emissions compo for families, business - 16 July 2008

South Australian Premier Mike Rann says he is pleased the Federal Government's green paper on how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions contains compensation measures for families and businesses.

He says about 35 large businesses in SA will be affected by an emissions trading scheme, such as BHP Billiton, Santos and OneSteel.

Mr Rann says he will begin consulting them this week about the implications of the green paper.

Fight to hit SA's green targets - 26 June 2008

South Australia's greenhouse gas emissions have fallen to their lowest level in 16 years but environmentalists are warning the decline is not enough to meet reduction targets.

Latest Federal Government figures show the state's greenhouse gas emissions fell by 8000 tonnes between 2005 and 2006 to be at their lowest level since 1990.

The state emitted 28 megatonnes of greenhouse gases in 2006 – 85.5 per cent of the 1990 emission level of 32.7 megatonnes.

Cemetery offers carbon neutral funerals - 11 March 2008

South Australia's largest cemetery will offer carbon-neutral cremations and burials as part of plans to offset the carbon emissions of its entire operations.

Centennial Park in Adelaide said its carbon offset scheme was believed to be a first for an Australian cemetery and followed a study into the environmental impacts of cremations and burials.

The Garnaut Climate Change Review - January 2008

The Garnaut Climate Change Review is an independent study by Professor Ross Garnaut, commissioned by Australia's State and Territory Governments on 30 April 2007.

The recently elected Prime Minister of Australia has confirmed the participation of the Commonwealth Government in the Review.

The Review will examine the impacts of climate change on the Australian economy, and recommend medium to long-term policies and policy frameworks to improve the prospects for sustainable prosperity.

The Review's final report is due on 30 September 2008, with a draft by 30 June 2008. A number of forums will also be held around Australia to engage the public on various issues relating to the Review.

The public is invited to make submissions for the Review's consideration.
