About the Natural Resources Sector

For the purposes of Tackling Climate Change, the Natural Resources Sector comprises South Australia’s natural resource assets of water (both marine and freshwater), soils, native plants, native animals and ecosystems, and associated industries - note: minerals and hydrocarbons are included in the Industry and Energy Sectors respectively. The sector includes:

  • biodiversity (native plants and animals, ecological communities and ecosystems) and biodiversity dependent industries
  • water resources and water service industries
  • land and land-based industries (i.e. all forms of agriculture and forestry)
  • the marine environment and marine-based industries.

Currently, about 21% of the State’s greenhouse emissions come from these sources. However, the sector is also an absorber of greenhouse gases, reducing its net contribution to 10% of the State’s total.
