Target zero

South Australia is taking a lead in targeting net zero emissions by 2050 and prioritising investment in low carbon industries and renewable electricity generation.

We aim to:

  • achieve net zero emissions by 2050
  • establish Adelaide as the world’s first carbon neutral city
  • achieve $10 billion in low carbon investment by 2025
  • improve energy efficiency of government buildings by 30 per cent by 2020.

The Climate Group is an international non-profit organisation with business and government to promote clean technologies and policies.  South Australia is a founding member of The Climate Group’s States and Regions Alliance, which brings together sub-national governments from around the world to share expertise and influence the international agenda.

The Government of South Australia and Adelaide City Council are partnering to achieve a Carbon Neutral Adelaide. Adelaide City Council has a strong track record of leadership, with emissions reductions of 60% from its own operations since 1994, and 20% from the City of Adelaide community from 2007 to 2013. During this period - the population grew by 27% - office floor area increased by 16% - the economy grew by 28%.
